#17: 5 Questions to Set You Up for a Transformational Practice Session

What story am I telling here?

Start by getting into storyteller mode vs singer mode.

What approach does each section of the song require (whisper, talk/conversational/call or wail)?

See what tension subsides and what “shoulds” you can shake off by doing this. By finding a more natural way of tackling some of those notes.

What’s getting in the way of me telling it in that way?

Are you overthinking? Listening and analysing more than you’re focused on creating?

Do you not feel comfortable singing in the space you’re in?

Are you running out of breath?

Do you feel nervous about the high note and could do a little deep practice to “find the bullseye” first?

Are you aiming for perfect vs deep practice, letting go or tapping into the sacred or the emotion?

What would I like more or less of (get specific)?

This is where you start getting specific about the colours you’d like to bring to life.

Remember your vocabulary - dark, sweet, breathy, clean, powerful, rich etc.

What words do I love the colour of and what am I doing on those?

What costumes that you’re wearing do you love and what others might you like to pull out of the costume box to try on?

Am I truly letting myself feel the emotion I’m wanting to convey?

Read and feel into the lyrics and the instrumentation.

Decipher what emotions the song weaves between.

Bring them to life in your body and let them guide your voice as you support yourself through the vulnerability.

Rinse and repeat.

Your turn
