The difference between a lifeless cover song and one that takes your own breath away starts with your EARS.

I’ll bet you haven’t given much thought to the way you LISTEN to songs.

Most singers spend 99% of their time and energy focusing on learning how to “sound good.”

Unfortunately we don’t spend a lot of time pulling apart what “good” really means.

You see, “good” for a bright, tap dance-heavy musical number is very different to slow, heart-wrenching pop break-up ballad.

“Good” for a punchy rock anthem is very different to a smooth, sultry jazz standard.

Unfortunately if you can’t automatically recreate a song in practice, you tend to start thinking things like…

“My voice just isn’t cut out for rock songs.”

“I can’t really sing ballads.”

“I guess my voice is only suited to opera or choral music.”

WHICH IS UTTERLY UNTRUE.

Your voice has a vast colour palette that you have probably never explored and didn’t even know existed.

It’s not that you’re doing something wrong.

It’s that singers are primarily taught to listen for pitch, rhythm and volume and to make creative decisions based solely on those basic elements.

And then you’re left wondering why it sounds a little bland, a little lifeless.

It’s because you’re taking something that was performed in vibrant technicolour and are attempting to recreate it in black and white.

2D vs 5D.

The very first step to “doing a song justice” is training your ear to hear what elements make up the tone that makes you melt.

That’s when your technical knowledge can truly become useful, because you understand what shape matches what colour.

Until you make the connection, you’ll continue to view technique as…

  • “right” vs “wrong,”

  • one size fits all or

  • a bunch of jargon phrases that confines your creativity rather than amplifies it.

I watched the recording of the Hearing Aid session a few weeks ago and it was so awesome!

I really liked the “weight” discussion - whispering, reflecting, speaking, calling out, wailing. After going through my working songs and assigning these weights, there was a noticeable difference.

But my big takeaway for me was the Dizzy Gillespie story... GAME. CHANGER. Seriously.

Hearing Aid is an interactive workshop to demystify what elements bring a song to life.

What is hiding beneath pitch, rhythm and volume that gives it that je ne sais quoi, that special sauce.

To give you the kind of clarity that empowers and excites you when you start working on a new song.

To help you see it as a puzzle to solve rather than something that either “suits you” or it doesn’t.

Your vocal versatility and ability to make a song uniquely yours (but still in the style and story) is directly linked to your ability to IMAGINE it with specificity.

Your AURAL IMAGINATION.

  • be able to identify specifically what is “missing” when you feel that your sound isn’t hitting the mark

  • take your knowledge of technique or shape and match it to the sound you want rather than just throwing anything at it and getting frustrated

  • know what will make your voice more stylistically flexible

  • be able to sing with your authentic voice but still use the colour palette that suits the style and the story

  • feel more liberated when it comes to CREATIVE CHOICES.
