#2: Why You've Been On Shaky Ground

One of the reasons singing and practice can get a heavy flavour to it is because we tend to entangle our self-worth with our level of skill or “talent.”

If our voice isn’t “behaving” we don’t think we’re “good enough to call ourselves a singer.”

Our self-doubt intensifies and we try harder and harder (often adding tension) because we think that if we could do it perfectly, then we’d be happy.

That THEN we could relax and enjoy our voice.

And for many of us who have had “formal training,” we had discipline and seriousness drilled into us, often in a way that added far more anxiety and pressure into the equation.

Elements of the voice (such as tone) that are almost always subjective were classified as “right and wrong” and many of us started fearing making a mistake because of what we’d make that mean.

All this to say, OF COURSE you’ve had a strained relationship with your voice.

Everything was funnelling you in that direction.

And you’re here to soften those edges over the next few weeks.
