#10: Creating Your Own Vocal Vocabulary

If you want to “sound good,” you need to be able to articulate what “good” means my dear.

Most singers “just want to sound good” but unfortunately that doesn’t give us nearly enough direction or instruction to make that happen.

We need to create a bulls-eye, a target, something concrete to aim for.

And I know that the voice is kind of mystical and intangible and hard to describe, but we’re going to give it our best shot!

Here are the examples I listed in the video to get you inspired:

Dark, bright, rich, breathy, sweet, raspy, powerful, gritty, tender, nasal, warm, thin, thick, resonant, full, round, aggressive, whingey, wail-y, clean, husky…

Now to add some of your own!

Your turn

What insights did you have when listening to other voices through this lens?

What words/colours are you drawn to and do you have any descriptive words to add to our list?
