What to Remember When You Can't Hit that Note

I know it's frustrating. You try to hit that "money note" in the song you've been working on, and it cracks.

Then you try again, and it's strained.
Then you try again, and it's weak and breathy.
Not at all what you wanted.

It would be easy to walk away.
To storm off, muttering to yourself about how you "can't do it", that you're "not cut out for this" or "will never get there".

Please don't walk away.

SO much of what singers can't do yet, is about mechanics.
About science and physiology.

Remember, it’s not that your voice sucks or that you can't ever learn to do (insert "hard" thing here).

It's that maybe you're using the wrong mouth shape.
That you've inhaled shallowly.
That you're scooping up to the note rather than hitting it bang on like a bullseye.
Or one of a dozen other things that could be making it inefficient or uncomfortable.

Your technical practice sessions are about INVESTIGATING.

About being CURIOUS and PROBLEM SOLVING.

But if you let the thought "your voice isn't good enough, you can’t do this" make the decisions, you'll never get to the solution.

WANT SOME HELP PUTTING THIS INTO PRACTICE?

I’ve created a simple checklist for you to step through and investigate what element of your technique could be causing you problems.
