3 Powerful Questions to Help You Sing a New Song with More Ease
Getting clarity on exactly how to approach a song you’re learning doesn't just make it easier to sing but also bolsters your confidence during the process.
These are questions that I ask my students all the time which have the added bonus of giving them the creative authority on how a song should sound.
Because you know when you're singing the song, you're the artist right?

1️⃣ What do you want?
Get clear on the tone you want in each section. Would you like it to be sweet or powerful? Bright or dark? Full and resonant or breathy and fragile?
This builds a roadmap and allows your brain to clearly communicate to the rest of your body so it can aim to create something specific with your voice.
Unfortunately most singers tend to aim for "good” without really deciding what would make it sound good to them.
2️⃣ Is this song in my range?
Stretching far beyond our vocal range (whether that’s our highest note overall or the highest note we can sing with power) will always lead to strain.
You can either sing it in a lighter, sweeter way (replacing a belt), lower the key or work your way up to that note in practice.
3️⃣ What is the emotional journey I’m moving through in this song?
Singing is all about storytelling and expression, so it makes sense that letting your emotions guide your voice can have a huge impact on sound and ease.
Knowing what emotions colour each section can allow you to bring them to life in your body and help your voice to create something more organic.
